Ditching the wedge and getting a high chair

This weekend is a four day weekend.  We have off on Monday for MLK, Jr. Day and on Tuesday for Obama’s Inauguration.  We hope to use the long weekend to make some changes with Morgan.

First, sleeping. Morgan has been sleeping in a wedge as we’ve tried to correct the flat spot on her head.  I think this is the weekend we bite the bullet and try to get her to sleep without the wedge.  Hopefully she’ll quickly get the hang of rolling back onto her back if/when she ends up on her stomach. (She doesn’t sleep on her stomach).

Second, eating.  We’re moving on to ‘Stage 2′ foods.  In general this would mean chunkier consistency.  However, since we’ve been making a lot of her food at home, we’ve already been giving her chunkier stuff.  So, in practice, this means the addition of meats to her diet.  That will be interesting.

Along with moving on to the newer foods, it is time to move to a high chair.  I don’ t know that we’ll actually pull this off this weekend, as we have to purchase one, but we’ll be doing it soon.

Finally, I think we’re going to be moving from 2 meals of solids a day to three.  We’re thinking of adding breakfast.

All in all, it should be an interesting weekend.

Neck Exercises

Morgan’s daycare providers had noticed that she tends to tilt her chin toward her left shoulder just a bit.  (Actually, I think my Dad may have mentioned this at one point too.)  Jim and I had noticed, but really didn’t give it much thought.  We thought it would resolve itself as she began to hold her head up and move about on her own.  But, the daycare workers encouraged us to go to the doctor and have him take a look.  And so we did…

He gave us some neck exercises to do with her 3 times a day, 10 reps a time.  It is simple, just a matter of stretching her neck towards her shoulder, holding, releasing, and repeating.  We are going to do this for a month and then see the doctor again.  At that time he’ll take another look.  If there isn’t any improvement, we’ll start physical therapy.  Though he very much doubts that will be necessary.

2 more teeth

(Sorry for the up-the-nose shot, that’s as clean as your getting from an infant in the wintertime)

Beginning to really roll from front to back

One morning last week, before we even left for daycare, Morgan rolled at least four times from front to back.  This is great, as we’re hoping to move her out of the wedge in her crib and just let her find her own comfortable way of sleeping.  The wedge is no longer useful in keeping her on the desirable side of her head, as she can turn too readily in it.  But it does still keep her on her back.  Without the wedge she rolls onto her tummy pretty quickly and then gets upset that she’s stuck on her stomach.  So if we can get her to complete the turn that would make everything much easier.

Jim even said that he saw her use rolling as a deliberate way to move from one place to the other Saturday morning.  I have yet to see evidence of such a thing, but still, pretty cool.  Apparently she was trying to get to this book he was holding so rolled over one sholder onto her back and then over the other sholder onto her stomach and then once more until she could reach it.

She was sick over the weekend (and thus a little lethargic), so all of this rolling progress sort of stalled out for a couple of days, but I’m optimistic.

Also, Annabel said that she was eating her solid foods so well at daycare that we could start bringing in less milk every day.  That should make things a little easier too.

My first commute alone with Morgan

As she has the past few years, Molly is teaching at Georgetown this Spring.  That means I get to take Morgan in and pick her up alone on Monday and Wednesday each week.

My first day, yesterday, coincided with one of the nastiest commuting days since Morgan started day care — it was low 30s F and pouring rain.  The good news is that Morgan seems to dig her rain shield.

For all you single gentlemen reading my baby’s blog (or who landed here due to a Google search gone horribly wrong), I have one thing to say to you: infant in stroller.  I don’t recall ever being so popular with the ladies.

Sitting photos

A few more recent photos of sitting attempts…

Videos: Playing with mirror and sitting

A video of Morgan playing with a mirror a couple weeks ago (she loves mirrors).  Not a perfect video, in that she’s not entirely unaware of the camera operator, but so it goes.

She’s started sitting pretty well in the last week, though you have to get her into that position.  Notice how she lifts herself from the supported sitting position to sitting almost straight up at the end.

Happy New Year!

Grandparents Wetzel came up yesterday and were kind enough to babysit Morgan overnight!  Jim and I went out for New Year’s Eve and were able to turn the baby monitor off and get a full nights sleep.  What a treat!  (I’m so old…)

We’re starting off the new year with some subtle shifts for Morgan as she continues her march toward independence.  We introduced her to a sippy cup today (with water in it), per her doctor’s instructions.  Once she learns to handle the cup we are supposed to move away from bottles and to the cup.  I don’t think the infant room at daycare will let us bring in a cup, I think they insist on bottles through her first birthday, but I digress.  Anyway, she LOVES the sippy cup.  She loved holding it herself, drinking water out of it, she doesn’t like to have it taken away from her, she will continue to hold it (even if not drinking from it) while you carry her around the apartment, etc.  She seriously loves the cup.  Jim took some photos which I’m sure he’ll post later…

It was a great 2008, hopefully 2009 will be just as wonderful.
