The other day (one of many days Morgan was home sick), she was banging two of her stacking rings together. I started banging the other two together. And then I held one out to her and she started banging her stacking ring into mine and smiling at me. Pretty cool.
She was back in daycare today. Apparently Annabel wasn’t working. Morgan was fussy all day, not at all smiley, and not eating well. They actually called Annabel to see if talking to Annabel on the phone would help. Morgan doesn’t really get phones yet, so I don’t think it helped, but it gives you an idea of how desperate they were.

This is sort of a sequel to the Playtime video, it picks up where that left off (but two months later). Morgan escapes the confines of her room and traverses the apartment. She’s gone from army crawling to full speed hands-and-knees crawling and stands at will.
Each transition is me having to stop the camera to stop her from playing with something potentially dangerous.
It’s 8 times time compressed, that is, the two minute video is about 16 minutes of her roaming and playing.

This morning’s surprise diagnosis was…
wait for it…
ear infection!
We’ve moved up to augmentin, which seems to be some sort of beefed up amoxicillin. Though we’re not really “my kid is sick, give her antibiotics”-type parents, and frankly generally avoid anti-bacterial products, attempting to medicate this into submission does seem the best path for her.
The doctor isn’t thrilled that she’s had ear infections in each month from January through April, and I would guess we’re one away from a referral to an ear-nose-throat specialist. But, Spring is here, so hopefully this will work and be the end of the ear infection season for her.

To update
- last Wednesday: dual ear infection
- last Friday: 9 mon well visit, the result of which was a diagnosis of low iron levels (“a little bit of anemia”)
- Monday: pink eye
- (unconfirmed by a pediatrician, but I believe it to be true) Monday/Tuesday: croup
In the longer term, we’re now giving Morgan an iron supplement. And we are supposed to be making sure she gets plenty of foods high in iron (cereal, spinach, red meat, beans, lentils, etc.). The pediatrician is going to repeat the blood tests again at the 12 and 15 mon visit. We are not in crisis mode or anything; lots of breastfed babies have low iron levels (formula is generally iron-fortified).
In the shorter term, Morgan seems to be recovering reasonably well from both her ear infections and her pink eye. When we went in on Monday the doctor said one ear looked great and the other was still a little pink. I suspect by now both look fine. And one of her eyes is completely fine. The other is still irritated looking, but isn’t generating any mucus. And it looks better than yesterday. So that is good news. Yet she is still not in daycare. Which brings me to croup.
When I got home Monday night, Morgan was sounding very hoarse and was developing a cough that sounded a little bark-like. By Tuesday night she was definitely having bouts of coughing where she sounded like a seal (an indicator of croup). Looking into it, there isn’t much a pediatrician can do for a mild case of croup, so we didn’t bother taking her in for a diagnosis. Nor would we have taken her in for the cough/fever even if it weren’t croup. Anyway, she’s been running fevers at night (including last night). Yesterday (Wed.) she refused to nap for more than 20 minutes, once in the morning and once in the evening. This morning she’s been asleep for a little over an hour so far. So already today is looking up. If she remains fever free today and tonight, we’ll take her in to daycare tomorrow. Croup generally lasts 3 to 7 days and her symptoms have been very mild, so we’ll see.
Poor kid. She’s having a rough week or two.
