Transition Week starts tomorrow

Morgan’s transition week starts tomorrow.  Mon-Wed she is in the Toddler One’s room from 9:30-12:30 and again from 3:30-4:30.  (She is supposed to nap from 1-3:15.) Thur-Fri she goes into the Toddler One’s room at 9:30 and we pick her up from that room at the end of the day.  It’ll be interesting…

We had our transition meeting with the lead teacher from the Infant Room and the lead teacher from the Ones room.  It was interesting to hear them talk about Morgan.  Neither one of us have spent a ton of time with lots of kids, so we don’t really have much of a frame of reference.  But, the lead teacher from the infant room confirmed that Morgan is, in fact, a talker.  And that she has become much more independent in her play lately.  The Infant Room teacher also seems to think that getting Morgan to hang out on her cot quietly if/when she wakes up before the other kids from naptime will be a challenge (see above re: talking).

They really put my mind at ease regarding the transition.  For instance, I found ‘circle time’ to be a bit of a puzzle.  Morgan has no interest in sitting still to have a book read to her.  But, they don’t force her to join in in any way.  In fact, they expect her to be exploring the room/doing other things at first.  But once she ages a bit, the room becomes less ‘new,’ and she sees all her friends sitting, she’ll come over to the circle and join in on her own.  So that made me feel better.

Listening to them talk about their expectations was very interesting.  Not because I think their expectations are too high, it was just a glimpse of what the next year will bring.  They are going to start her with a plate and a bowl (she currently eats off the table or her tray).  And she is going to learn how to eat from a bowl with a spoon by herself.  And they start using a fork.  And apparently the kids can find their own cubby (it has their picture on it) and find their cot for naptime.  In fact, when you tell the older kids it is naptime, they get up, walk over to the counter, put their bottles down, and then walk to their cot, get in, and go to sleep.  Blows my mind…

I think we are in this room until about 22 months, so she’ll transition to the ‘Toddler Twos’ room a few months before she actually turns 2.
